Area Information Center for 211 Texas

The Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission (GCRPC) is designated as the Area Information Center for 2-1-1 Texas.  The Health and Human Services Commission is the funding, contracting  and regulatory authority for 2-1-1.

What is 211?

2-1-1 is a free, easy-to-remember number that connects callers with health and human services in their area.  No matter where you live in Texas, you can call and get referrals to services available in local communities.  It is a free, multilingual line answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week all year round.  Calls can be made from a conventional telephone, a cell phone or a TTY phone for persons with hearing impairment.  Operators are trained, knowledgeable staff members who work in communities in Texas for hometown agencies, such as United Way offices and Regional Planning Commissions.  The state-wide 2-1-1 resource directory is available on-line at www.211texas.org.

Who calls 211?

People call 2-1-1 looking for food pantries, homeless shelters and utility assistance; parents call looking for licensed day care or summer food programs; individuals looking for GED classes; and older adults seeking in-home services or information about Medicare and other public benefits. Persons with special medical needs call 2-1-1 to register for a ride in case their county evacuates in times of emergencies or disasters.  2-1-1 is also the number to call to obtain information about services during a disaster.  It is the number to call when you don’t know who to call.
