People who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities throughout the Golden Crescent region may have little or no contact with the outside world. Many feel they lack control over their lives. A certified volunteer ombudsman who visits regularly can be the highlight of a resident's day and ensure residents get good care.
If you have a passion for helping others, a caring spirit, and a willingness to learn, we need you! Become a Volunteer Ombudsman and help improve the quality of life and care for residents in a facility within the Golden Crescent region. We provide training, tools, and ongoing support from our local ombudsman program.

Volunteer Ombudsman Needed: You Can Make a Difference!

<h3>General Description</h3>
Provide moderately complex (journey-level) volunteer assistance to the Golden Crescent Long-Term Care Ombudsman program within the Aging and Community Services department. Work involves providing services to protect the health, safety, welfare, and rights’ of residents in nursing and assisted living facilities. Work under moderate supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Ombudsman Coordinator.
<h3>Examples of Work Performed</h3>
<ul>
	<li>Develop a cooperative working relationship with facility staff and other advocates.</li>
	<li>Interact with and get to know residents and families in assigned facilities.</li>
	<li>Seek out hard-to-reach and isolated residents.</li>
	<li>Respect and protect the privacy and confidentiality of residents.</li>
	<li>Demonstrate sensitivity to the social and emotional needs of residents.</li>
	<li>Serve as a resource when assistance is sought in making an appropriate placement in a facility or alternate care setting.</li>
	<li>Provide information to the managing local ombudsman regarding problems in facilities and discuss concerns, problems and questions involving the facility with the Ombudsman Coordinator.</li>
	<li>Identify, investigate and resolve complaints from residents, families and friends, consistent with guidance from the Ombudsman Coordinator.</li>
	<li>Resolve resident issues and complaints within the facility whenever possible.</li>
	<li>Participate in open hearings (if scheduled), surveys, resident group and exit interviews with Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) Regulatory Services.</li>
	<li>Support the development of and provide consultation to family and resident councils.</li>
	<li>Visit assigned facilities regularly to ensure that residents have timely access to ombudsman services and receive timely responses to complaints.</li>
	<li>Practice effective communication techniques with residents, families, facility staff and ombudsman staff.</li>
	<li>Comply with established lines of communication and supervision.</li>
	<li>Provide feedback and/or in-service training to facility staff as appropriate and with concurrence of Ombudsman Coordinator.</li>
	<li>Attend Resident and/or Family Council meetings when invited by Council members.</li>
	<li>Submit monthly reports to Ombudsman Coordinator.</li>
	<li>Attend the minimum required hours of annual continuing education.</li>
	<li>Carry out other activities that the Ombudsman Coordinator determines to be appropriate.</li>

<h3>General Qualification Guidelines</h3>
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION 
Bachelor’s degree in social services or related field; or high school graduate, plus two years of aging experience preferred or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides required knowledge skills and abilities. Bilingual preferred. English/Spanish.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 
Knowledge of client confidentiality practices and procedures 
Knowledge of office practices and administrative procedures. 
Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software. 
Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills. 
Effective writing, speaking, presenting and active lsitening skills. 
Ability to drive to service area to market. 
Ability to respond to public inquiries in a timely manner; to implement administrative procedures; to interpret rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; and to communicate effectively
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED 
Drivers License or alternative means of transportation. 
Obtain Volunteer Ombudsman Certification from the State Long-term care Ombudsman program within 3 months of employment. 
Pass a criminal history check
