Collection Day

Through the financial assistance of Clean Harbors Environmental Services and the Chemical Council of the Golden Crescent Region, the cities of Victoria and Port Lavaca, the area is much safer and healthier. The Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission’s Environmental Resources staff provides technical assistance with the planning and organization of the annual Household Hazardous Waste Day.  

Household Hazardous Waste Day for Victoria and Port Lavaca is scheduled for Saturday April, 26, 2003

 

After much preparation and planning, the Household Hazardous Waste & Recyclables

Committee (HHW Committee) collected and safely managed 26,891 pounds of

household hazardous waste in Victoria and Port Lavaca.  In this joint, twelve hour

collection effort between two cities and approximately seventy-five (75) volunteers, the

following statistics were complied :

                     ►Population of Collection Area           Victoria – 83,000

                                                                                 Pt. Lavaca – 21,000

           ►Total Participants                              Victoria – 814

           ►Total amount of waste to be disposed of at Hazwaste Facility: 

                26,891 pounds, excluding amount of hazardous paint

                                      ►Amount of hazardous paint collected: 44,753 pounds

                           ►Total cost for Hazardous Waste Contractor:  $83,455.00

  ►Paint recycled:            170 gallons                       

  ►Auto batteries collected:                      Victoria – 380

  ►Used oil collected:                               Victoria – 990 gallons

  ►Antifreeze collected:                             Victoria – 70 gallons

The Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission and its Environmental Resources staff look forward to assisting with the 2003 Household Hazardous Waste Day. This very important day enhances and promotes the Regional Solid Waste Management Plan and its efforts of source reduction and recycling.
